"The Pearl Café Wins 2010 Taste Our Island Award"

The Pearl Café Wins 2010 Taste Our Island Award The Pearl Café is the winner of the PEI ADAPT Council's 'Taste Our Island Award' for 2010. The winner and the four runners-up were awarded at Fall Flavours' finale Roving Feast at the Confederation Centre on Thursday, September 30.

This prestigious and highly sought after annual award recognizes restaurateurs who support sustainable regional food systems, use local ingredients from Island suppliers, and promote local food to their customers. The event featured a smorgasbord buffet dinner with 100% locally grown dishes prepared by the top ten Taste Our Island Award nominees for 2010.

According to Elmer MacDonald, Chair of PEI ADAPT, "This year we had a 50% increase in nominations from the previous year, over 150 nominations for 51 different restaurants."

Owner Maxine Delaney describes The Pearl Café as an “eclectic eatery located between the picturesque fishing village of North Rustico and Cavendish Beach.” Delaney's restaurant has been a Taste Our Island Award finalist in two previous years. However, this year, Chef Lanny MacLeod's extensive use and mention of local foods and suppliers on the menu helped to put them on top.

The award itself consists of a full-page ad in the 2011 PEI Visitor’s Guide, and a hand crafted plate by Victoria’s Glass.

Four runners-up also received hand crafted plates, including: Chef Emily Wells of The Dunes Café, Chef Shirleen Peardon of The Merchantman Pub, Chef Warren Barr of The Inn at Bay Fortune, and Chef Geoff Crowther of The Kitchen Witch. Additional finalists included: Chef Mark Gregory of the Selkirk, Chef Ilona Daniel of Off-Broadway, Chef Adam Loo of Clam Diggers, Chef Gordon Bailey of Lot 30 and Chef John Bill of Ship to Shore.
